TOUR DESCRIPTION: Only 90
minutes from San Jose, Carara is a perfect introduction
to tropical forest. Starting early in the morning, we shall
take the Old Spanish route of 1606 to the Pacific Ocean.
This is one of the most scenic roads in all Costa Rica;
the extreme geography and very colorful agricultural landscape
produce a delightful journey to the coast.
The Carara National Park covers
a low mountainous area of 4,700 hectares in a climate zone
of transition from the dry north Costa Rican Pacific to
the very humid coast of the south. It’s a type of dry rain
forest, where, in spite of the lushness of the vegetation,
it has relatively clear undergrowth that makes it easy for
a person to observe the abundant wildlife.
Some of the most easily seen birds
are Scarlet Macaws, parrots, parakeets, guans, toucans,
ant-birds, trogons, tinamous, hummingbirds, wood-creepers,
fly-catchers, kingfishers, raptors, vultures, pigeons, manakins,
etc. The insect fauna is rich and spectacular: we can find
here the Morpho butterfly, beetles of bright metallic colours,
wasps and bees of many kinds, centipedes, leave cutter ants,
and stick insects.
Mammals are very abundant. The most commons to see are Coatis,
White-faced Capuchin, Ant Eaters, agoutis, Squirrels and
armadillos. Carara protects important archaeological sites.
Huetar-culture graves are being studied and beautiful stone,
pottery and gold objects have been found in the park.
