The highest volcano in Costa Rica 's mountain range, Irazu, is only about one hour's drive southeast of San Jose . The summit is 11,257 feet . Here, on a clear day, some two miles above sea level; it is possible to see both the Atlantic and pacific oceans. It' s best to bring along a sweater as it gets chilly exploring the miles of eerie landscape that surrounds the crater. Along the way is the historic city of Cartago , Costa Rica 's first capital, founded by the Spaniards in 1563. Today, considered being the country's religious center, Cartago's Basilica de Los Angeles was constructed in honour of the patron saint of the country.
