Irazu Volcano, Costa Rica

The highest volcano in Costa Rica 's mountain range, Irazu, is only about one hour's drive southeast of San Jose . The summit is 11,257 feet . Here, on a clear day, some two miles above sea level; it is possible to see both the Atlantic and pacific oceans. It' s best to bring along a sweater as it gets chilly exploring the miles of eerie landscape that surrounds the crater.

Along the way is the historic city of Cartago , Costa Rica 's first capital, founded by the Spaniards in 1563.
