Costa Rica is one of the world's most attractive destinations for adventurous travelers, whether gay or straight, and for good reason. The mountains teem with rare and exotic birds, flowers, butterflies and wildlife. Some of the world's most beautiful remaining rain forests are protected here; their misty waterfalls and pristine lagoons beckon visitors from around the globe. The isolated tropical beaches and warm aquamarine seas here are unsurpassed.
If all that isn't enough, the gay visitor will find a warm welcome from the friendly local Ticos (the nickname for Costa Ricans, derived from their affinity for ending words with the Spanish suffix "tico" or "tica," meaning "little.") Costa Rica is an unusually progressive Latin American nation- -the citizens decided years ago that they would prefer not to have an army, and the country has been a politically stable democracy for years. There are popular gay establishments in larger towns and cities all over the country, especially in the capital city of San Jose and in Manuel Antonio and Quepos on the Pacific Coast . Overall, Ticos are a remarkably tolerant and friendly people. (Gay Costa Rica)
This is not to say that Costa Rica is a tropical version of San Francisco 's Castro district. This is still Latin America , where conservative Catholicism and traditional family values hold sway. Overtly gay behavior and public displays of same-sex affection are usually frowned upon. In other words, it's a lot like Europe and North America . (Gay Costa Rica)
Travelers flock to Costa Rica not for the nightlife, the cultural amenities or the progressive social attitudes. The star attraction here is the unbelievable, and unbelievably varied, natural beauty; towering volcanoes brood over immense swaths of untouched rainforest; whitewater rafters crash through rapids on untamed rivers; fantastic, colorful tropical fish flit beneath the water's surface at tropical, palm-studded beaches. The infrastructure for eco-tourism is a mainstay of the national economy, bringing in millions from surfing, rafting, sailing, hiking, fishing, mountaineering, biking, caving, kayaking, snorkeling, etc. The climate is frequently cited as one of the world's best- -many buildings in San Jose and the surrounding Central Valley have neither air conditioning nor heating, since the temperature rarely goes above or below the 70's. (Gay Costa Rica)
The visitors who enjoy Costa Rica the most are those who expect a little adventure in their travel. If the sight of an insect sends you squealing, you may prefer another destination. If, however, the chance to see pristine natural beauty one of the world's greatest collections of nature preserves excites you, a relaxed, gay-friendly environment is appealing, and you want your vacation dollar to stretch, Costa Rica may be your prefect vacation spot. Moreover, you may wish to join the thousands of North American and European expatriates who so loved their experience here that they now call Costa Rica home.
WHEN & HOW TO GO
Only 10 degrees north of the equator, Costa Rica has a dozen climate zones, with little variation from mild temperatures, except on the coasts where it can be warmer and more humid, and on the mountaintops, where cooler air prevails year-round. In general, you can expect the months between December and April to be drier, with most rain coming between May and November. Traveling to Costa Rica during its wet (or "green") season offers the advantage of lower prices, fewer crowds and more natural adventuring through the country's eco-structure. Even in the green season the mornings are usually bright and clear, with a shower in the afternoon and heavier rains at night. The best weather is from Christmas through Easter, but there are some exceptions and variation between the coasts. If you're not visiting in the dry season, prepare to get wet, and you'll have a great time. (Gay Costa Rica)
